What an inspiring event today, 15th November, in Carrickfergus Town Hall.
A gang of change makers gathered for “The Future’s Already Here: Communities Stepping Into Their Power.” The event was a celebration of innovative ideas and grassroots action, highlighting how communities can transform challenges into thriving futures.
A Day of Connection and Insight
The event kicked off with an optional morning tour of Carrick Greengrocers, showcasing a powerful example of community ownership. The greengrocers, a project born from local collaboration, demonstrates how re-imagining economic structures can revitalize a town.
At 10 AM, the main session began, featuring thought-provoking talks and four interactive workshops. We had the opportunity to explore a variety of topics, including the co-operative model, tools for systems change, creative action in communities and methods for organizing inclusive futures.
We heard from passionate speakers who shared insights into the ongoing work to build equitable, resilient communities.
Some Key Themes
• Re-imagining Local Economies: The Carrick Greengrocers project was a recurring highlight, showing how communities can reclaim agency by fostering local businesses that prioritize people over profit.
• Creative Action: Hands-on exercises inspired participants to see creativity not just as art but as a tool for connection, collaboration, and problem-solving.
• Systems Change: We learned practical ways to challenge entrenched systems, starting with reframing narratives and fostering positive relationships.
The Power of Collaboration
A key takeaway was the importance of working together. As one speaker put it, “We’re not just wearing one hat—we’re bringing all parts of ourselves to create change.” From grassroots initiatives to international frameworks, the discussions underscored the power of communities to lead transformational change when united.
Closing Reflections
The day ended with a sense of optimism and determination. Someone said, “This isn’t just about solving problems—it’s about imagining and creating a world where we all thrive.” The event reminded everyone that while the future may be daunting, it’s already taking root in projects like those shared today.
