Christian Aid Week 2025

Christian Aid Week 2025, held from 11–17 May, focused on Guatemala, highlighting the severe impacts of the climate crisis on Indigenous communities, particularly in regions like Alta Verapaz. This focus was part of Christian Aid’s 80th-anniversary campaign, emphasizing the urgent need to address climate-induced hunger and poverty in vulnerable areas.

In Guatemala, extreme weather events such as prolonged droughts and intense heatwaves have devastated crops, leading to increased food insecurity. Indigenous communities, who have contributed least to global emissions, are disproportionately affected. Christian Aid, in partnership with local organizations like Congcoop, has been working to provide farmers with training in climate-resilient agriculture, water conservation techniques, and sustainable farming practices. The campaign featured stories of resilience, such as those of Amelia and Aurelia,  mothers from Alta Verapaz. Facing the challenges of climate change, Amelia engaged in agroecology training and became a community leader, sharing her knowledge to help others adapt and build sustainable futures.

Supporters across the UK and Ireland participated in various fundraising activities, including the ’70k in May’ challenge, bake sales, and community events, to support these initiatives. The funds raised are instrumental in providing the necessary resources and training to empower communities in Guatemala to combat the effects of climate change and work towards a more sustainable future.
