The 16th session of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16) is currently taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 2nd-13th December. This conference brings together 197 parties to address pressing global issues like land degradation, desertification and drought resilience. Under the theme “Our Land. Our Future”, the event emphasizes the importance of sustainable land management in combating climate change, enhancing biodiversity, and securing livelihoods.
Key highlights from the conference so far, include:
- Drought Resilience: A major focus is on strengthening policies, funding and scientific approaches to manage drought risks effectively. The World Meteorological Organization is presenting tools to improve early warning systems and enhance global preparedness for climate-induced droughts.
- Integrated Solutions: Discussions cover sustainable farming practices, nature-based solutions and policies to restore degraded lands. The conference stresses aligning efforts with the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable DevelopmentSustainable Development is a development approach that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It balances economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being to ensure long-term sustainability. It’s often described as having three main aspects: • Economic Sustainability: This means making sure we grow the economy without using up natural resources or hurting the environment.
• Environmental Sustainability: This means protecting the environment, including all the different kinds of life on Earth, for future generations.
• Social Sustainability: This means making sure everyone has a fair chance and that life is good for everyone.
The concept was popularized by the Brundtland Report and is central to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs). More Goals (SDGs). - Action Agenda: The event introduces thematic days, such as Land Day, focusing on ecosystem restoration and Finance Day, highlighting innovative funding mechanisms. Additionally, forums like the Gender Caucus and Youth Forum spotlight inclusive participation in sustainable land management efforts.
- Commitments and Goals: Participating nations are expected to commit to ambitious land restoration goals by 2030, promote women’s land rights and engage youth in creating sustainable land-based job opportunities
