Fridays For Future was brought to Northern Ireland five years ago this week by Anna Kernahan, inspired by the global movement founded by Greta Thunberg. Since then, there have been weekly protests in Belfast and further afield all over the country to raise awareness of the climate crisis.
Notable achievements include the 19th of September 2019, when 7,000 people took to the treets of Belfast to demand climate action from our government. Two weeks later Belfast City Council heard us and declared a climate emergency for the city. In addition, Anna has represented FFF NI at the European Parliament and COP26.
For 6 months, it was a solo protest, but it has grown over time. However, as the movement has progressed, climate action steps have not.
We are far from being done. We demand a clean Lough Neagh, an independent environmental protection agency, and intersectional climate justice — and more!
The Friday 6th September 2024, took place once again outside Belfast City Hall for our weekly meetup but also to celebrate our 5 year anniversary.
